I am a normal human being.

Even though I don’t have nationality,

“I feel like a fish stuck in a square pond. I want to be a beautiful bird that can fly in the sky and go freely in any direction.”

Artee Ma-Yer is an 18-year-old high school student from Northern Thailand. She wants to show and preserve Thai culture by becoming a dance teacher. These dreams might not come true, because she is stateless – like some half a million people living in Thailand.

Artee thinks she has no nationality because her parents were illiterate and never registered her birth with the Thai authorities.

UNHCR is working with the Thai Government to make sure people like Artee can receive Thai nationality in the future.
