“We as African Rwandese people when we love someone we give him/her this to wish the person good luck. We also give it as a gift to the couple who are getting married at their marriage ceremonies. It portrays a couple with a child and food which means you are wishing them to have baby and food.” 44 year old refugee artist, Bahimba from Rwanda said. ; On the occasion of launching the Artists for Refugees project, UNHCR Kenya organized an exhibition for refugee artists from Dadaab and Kakuma camps and Nairobi to exhibit beautiful art pieces in the auditorium gallery at the Alliance Française in Nairobi, from 4 to 6 November 2015. Intricately handcrafted sculptures and various art pieces were on display from both, camp and urban-based refugees. The event was also marked with pomp and colour as refugees from Dadaab, Kakuma and Nairobi showcased their talents in various forms. Cultural dance groups from Kakuma Refugee Camp performed exciting Somali Bantu, South Sudanese and Burundian dances. Official from the Government of Kenya, Embassies, UNHCR and other Organizations attended the event. In addition, Nairobi citizens enjoyed visiting the beautiful art of the refugees during the three days exhibition and the following concert performed by Octopizzo, renown international rapper and key partner in the project. UNHCR Kenya is working on this project with several famous Kenya musicians and artists, including Octopizzo and Victor Ndula, in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps and among the urban refugees in Nairobi. The aim of this initiative is to empower refugees through the art, improve skills of refugee artists and enhance their livelihood opportunities.

Since 1996, Rwanda has been hosting primarily Congolese refugees who — since the 2012-2013 renewed hostilities in eastern DRC caused a sudden influx of refugees — now number over 74,000. Rwanda and UNHCR work together to ensure protection and multisectoral assistance for all refugees and asylum seekers living in five camps throughout the country, including urban refugees in Kigali.

Rwanda also continuously receives Rwandan returnees who are coming home since the 1951 Convention Cessation Clause was invoked in June 2013, and UNHCR with the Government and partners receives and assists returnees to reintegrate in Rwanda.

As Rwanda is one of the smallest countries in Africa and the continent’s most densely populated country, local integration for refugees has proven to be challenging.
