Popole Misenga absorbs the adulation of the crowd in Rio de Janeiro after his second round match against Gwak Dong-han from the Republic of Korea. ; For the first time in Olympic history the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has created a team of refugees who will compete as the Refugee Olympic Team in Rio in August 2016. Popole Misenga was separated from his parents as a child during fighting in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He lived in a home for displaced children in Kinshasa and trained in judo. He now lives in Brazil where he sought asylum after being abandoned by his coach during an international competition. He shares a tiny apartment in a favela in Rio with his Brazilian partner, Fabiana, and their four children where the whole family sleeps in one bedroom. Popole trains with coach Flavio Canto, an Olympic bronze medallist in judo and earned a place on the Refugee Olympic Team for Rio 2016.
