NAPLES - England's Chelsea Football Club has contributed to humanitarian organisation Plan International to aid Syrian child refugees in Alexandria, Egypt, donating enough to provide school materials for 400 children, as well as access to courses to make up for time missed in school and psychological trauma support. Last September, the London football club donated more than 50,000 pounds (about 65,000 euros), collecting one pound from each ticket sold for the London derby against Arsenal, as well as auctioning off player jerseys worn during the Champions League match against Maccabi Tel Aviv. "We've all seen images of the physical devastation caused by the conflict in Syria - but the psychological impact on children can be even more profound," said Tanya Barron, CEO of Plan International UK, in a statement published on Chelsea's website. "With Chelsea's support we're helping Syrian children who have fled to Egypt as they recover and rebuild their lives. Getting children back into school is a crucial part of this - not only to catch up on months or even years of lost schooling, but to bring back a much-needed sense of normality." With Chelsea's contribution, Plan International was able to purchase 400 "school kits" with socks, shoes, and books, which were given as a priority to unaccompanied children, children who are working, children from single parent families and children with illnesses or disabilities.(ANSAmed).
