Organised crime, armed groups, statelessness and decades of conflict all pose a serious risk to populations in the Americas. Over seven million people are now displaced and asylum applications, particularly from Central American countries such as El Salvador and Guatemala, have sharply increased.
However, several countries have shown political commitment to solving protracted refugee situations in the region.
At UNHCR, we work hard to facilitate this, focusing on targeted interventions within countries of origin, as well as countries of transit and asylum. We also work with partners to find durable solutions.
