EDITORIAL
As the centre of reference for Olympic knowledge, the Olympic Studies Centre constantly seeks to increase access to relevant and up-to-date Olympic resources and knowledge for students and researchers around the world. Significant human and financial resources are being invested in collecting, preserving, digitising and disseminating the invaluable Olympic patrimony and knowledge that make up our collections. Besides providing online access to the largest possible number of publications and documents via our website and digital catalogue, our team is also available to respond to your specific requests and guide you to the relevant publications for your academic activities. We also count on your valuable contribution in order to keep adding to our collection of Olympic knowledge. We hope you find the information in this newsletter useful!
OSC NEWS
Research grant programmes: The 2016/2017 edition of the Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme will be launched in October 2015. The deadline for applications is 5 February 2016. All details will be available here.
Medical Commission: The description of these archives is now available. They narrate the history, missions and work of this Commission, and join the rest of the IOC decision-making body series already accessible online.
Patrimonial Assets Management (PAM) programme: After seven years of work, the IOC was rewarded with the prestigious International Broadcasting Convention 2015 prize for its unique approach to preservation and for making its unique patrimony available to broadcasters, researchers, partners and other professionals. Through the Olympic Multimedia Library (TOML), the Olympic Movement and its partners can gain digital access to a century of archives of Olympic history in a single location. University professors, researchers and students conducting research or other academic activities on Olympism and/or sport can request access to this database by going to our extranet and selecting The Olympic Multimedia Library.
IOC AND OLYMPIC MOVEMENT ACTIVITIES
Olympic Games: In keeping with its commitment to good governance, transparency and ethics, following the adoption of Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC has published all the documents related to host city candidatures, including the Candidature Process Olympic Games 2024, the Candidature Questionnaire Olympic Games 2024, the Host City Contract Principles and the Host City Contract Operational Requirements. This is the first time that the full package of documentation has been made public at the very outset of the process. The report by the Evaluation Commission for the 3rd Youth Olympic Games in 2020, which highlights the opportunities and challenges faced by Lausanne (which was elected) and Brasov, the Report of the 2022 Evaluation Commission and the Host City Contract for Beijing 2022 are also available online.
IOC publications: Several documents recently published by the IOC are now available online: the 2015 edition of the Code of Ethics, the 2015 edition of the Olympic Marketing Fact File and the 2014 IOC Annual Report. Entitled “Credibility, Sustainability and Youth”, this report offers detailed information about the IOC and explains the major impact that Olympic Agenda 2020 has had on the IOC.
Anti-Doping Rules: The Rules applicable to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro are now available online.
Consensus on youth athletic development: Protecting athletes’ health and preventing injuries and illnesses in sport are top priorities for the IOC and its Medical and Scientific Commission. After a consensus meeting in November last year, the IOC published a series of evidence-based recommendations on youth athletic development, and called on all youth and sport governing bodies to implement them. These recommendations and conclusions can now be consulted here.
Report on the legacy of the Olympic & Paralympic Games London 2012: Published by the UK Government and the Mayor of London, “Inspired by 2012: The legacy from the Olympic and Paralympic Games – third annual report” is now available online. It describes the legacy activities implemented in the third year since the London 2012 Games and covers a number of areas, from Sport and Healthy Living to Economic Growth and The Legacy from the Paralympics.
IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury & Illness in Sport: The 5th edition of this Conference, which is held every three years, will take place in Monaco from 16 to 18 March 2017. This event will adopt a multidisciplinary approach, including lectures, debates, presentations and workshops. It will bring together eminent international experts on injury and illness prevention, with a view to working together and sharing the latest discoveries and trends. The Scientific Committee is launching a call for proposals, with a deadline of 2 November 2015.
ACADEMIC WORLD AND OLYMPISM
The Olympic Games and the Media: The second edition of this online course, organised by the Olympic Studies Centre at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, will start on 19 October 2015 and will last five weeks. Available in English and Spanish, it will allow students to explore the universe of the media and their role in the construction of the Olympic Games.
International Conference on Historical and Contemporary Issues in Olympic Studies: The Olympic Studies Centre of the University of Johannesburg and the Olympic Studies Centre of the German Sport University Cologne, are pleased to announce a new common initiative. The international academic Conference will take place between 29 November and 3 December 2015 at the University of Johannesburg. Leading experts from a range of academic backgrounds will contribute to this event. For more information, please contact the organisers.
