EDITORIAL
On 10 April 1915, Baron Pierre de Coubertin decided in agreement with the City to establish the IOC headquarters in Lausanne. A century later, on 10 April 2015, President Thomas Bach officially celebrated this important anniversary and paid homage to the founder of the modern Olympic Movement: “Pierre de Coubertin himself decided to establish the IOC in Lausanne. It was the right decision to take then and it still is now. One century later, the Olympic Movement continues to flourish in the city that Coubertin chose.” Join us in celebrating this centennial anniversary by watching a video produced by The Olympic Museum for the temporary exhibition “100 Years Together… the IOC & Lausanne”.

Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme 2015/2016: We are pleased to announce that seven research grants have been awarded as part of the second edition of the programme. Information on the grant holders and their projects will be available in the News section of our website by mid-July. We take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the peer-reviewers who have taken part in the evaluation process since the creation of this programme, as well as the members of our Research Grant Selection Committee. The next edition will be launched in October 2015.
Postgraduate Research Grant Programme: The 2014 grant holders’ final reports are now available online (only in English). We also remind you that the deadline for receiving candidatures for the 2016 edition is 25 September 2015. Do not hesitate to pass on the information on this programme to your students and encourage them to participate.
Bibliography on the legacies and impact of the Games: The 2015 version of this list is now available online. This document lists the publications published between 2008 and 2014 which address the concepts of the Games’ impact and legacy from cultural, social, political, economic, environmental, sports or city transformation points of view. This document is a reference for all those who want to quickly access the best resources or see the most recent publications in this area.
History of sports at the Summer Games: In about a year from now, the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio will be in full swing. To find out about all the events on the programme of this edition, as well some background on the sports, we invite you to read the 39 reference documents that retrace the evolution of the disciplines through key dates. You will find in these documents tables summarising the evolution in the number of events.
THE ACADEMIC WORLD AND OLYMPISM
Second International Colloquium of Olympic Studies and Research Centres (OSCs): This event will be held on 2 and 3 August 2016 in Porto Alegre (Brazil), immediately prior to the opening of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Colloquium, organised by the Olympic Studies Research Group at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, is for OSC representatives and aims to encourage dialogue and networking among them. It follows on from the successful inaugural Colloquium held in Loughborough (UK) in 2012. A first announcement will be sent out by the organisers in July 2015.
IOC AND OLYMPIC MOVEMENT ACTIVITIES
IOC anti-doping research fund: The call for researchers to apply for support and funding for athlete-centred projects, involving both science and social research has been re-opened from 15 June to 15 August 2015. This fund, managed by the IOC Medical and Scientific Commission, responds to the IOC’s commitment to protect clean athletes for the sake of the future of sport and to protect athletes’ health.
First International Forum for Sports Integrity: This event, held in April, adopted a roadmap to protect clean athletes. The measures adopted focus on the following themes: education and information; intelligence and investigations; andlegislation and regulation. Behind the scenes of the Games: This online catalogue, produced by the IOC and regularly updated, gives you access to videos filed by theme which will allow you to discover and introduce your students to behind the scenes of organising the Olympic Games. If you wish to order these videos for your educational purposes, you may contact images@olympic.org directly.
Olympic Solidarity: You can find in the 2014 report all the information on the programmes implemented for NOCs last year and the most significant results. These programmes illustrate Olympic Solidarity’s mission to develop and promote sport worldwide and encourage athletes’ participation in the Olympic Games.
Olympic Winter Games 2022: The report by the Evaluation Commission highlighting the opportunities and challenges associated with hosting the Winter Games in 2022 in both candidate cities, Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Beijing (China) is now available online. The host city for the Olympic Winter Games 2022 will be elected during the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur.
Study on the economic impact of the IOC and 45 sports organisations in Switzerland: The latest results of a study commissioned by the IOC and the Lausanne and Vaud authorities show that the IOC and the 45 international sports organisations based in Switzerland have an annual economic impact of CHF 1.07 billion on the country in which they are based. This study, coordinated by the Olympic Studies Centre, was led by the International Academy of Sports Science and Technology under the supervision of IMD professor Stéphane Garelli and Georgetown University professor Jean-Jacques Dethier.
