Olympic Spirit in Dadaab
UNHCR, 09/08/2012
DADAAB, Kenya, 9 August (UNHCR) – The cheering from their fans is unlikely to have much effect on this football team drawn from the five sprawling refugee camps at Dadaab: all the members of EL-MAN DEAF FC have limited or no hearing. That has not stopped them playing well. Earlier this month – showing the Olympic spirit on a dry desert field far from the rain of Britain -- the team easily defeated a team of NGO and UN players 2-0. Tomoya Soejima, a UNHCR Youth Officer who works closely with the team, saw the victory as instilling further confidence. The team is now ready to travel this month to the capital, Nairobi, to compete in a national tournament organised by the Kenyan football Federation of the Deaf (KFFD), in what for many players will be the first time they have left the refugee camps of north-eastern Kenya. "I always dreamt of participating in a tournament and of b...

Refugees lament losses as fire razes market in Kenya's Dadaab camp
UNHCR, 03/08/2012
DADAAB, Kenya, August 2 (UNHCR) – A devastating fire that razed a market in Kenya's Dadaab refugee complex last weekend has highlighted the need for better fire safety preparedness and response in the world's largest refugee camp. The fire started on Sunday evening in the market of Dagahaley camp, one of five camps in the sprawling Dadaab refugee complex in north-eastern Kenya. None of the 124,000 mainly Somali refugees in Dagahaley was hurt, but 80 per cent of the market was destroyed. Some of neighbouring residential blocks were also damaged and looted as the residents fled. The market had grown into a city within the camp over the last 20 years, with winding streets, narrow alleys and large, roofed interconnected bazaars. Almost anything was for sale in the market, from vegetables to mobile phones. Now most of this lies in ruins and ashes and many people have lost their proper...

UNHCR employs alternative strategies in managing the Dadaab camps
UNHCR Briefing Notes, 27/01/2012
In an effort to maintain operations despite prevailing insecurity and reduced humanitarian access at Kenya’s Dadaab refugee camps, UNHCR has been exploring ways to ensure uninterrupted assistance and services in the world’s largest refugee settlement.

The new measures include stronger and deeper involvement of the refugee communities in the day-to-day running of the camps, by reaching out to different groups within the refugee population, such as elders, the business community, and youth. Complementing this, UNHCR is organizing additional training, mentoring and capacity building for refugee workers and volunteers.

Refugees have always had a role in making camps work. However at Dadaab that role is being expanded. Hospitals, for example, have remained open throughout this difficult period, staffed by refugees, nationals, and a limited number of international staff. Fur...

UNHCR alarmed over recent security incidents at Dadaab
UNHCR Web Site, 21/12/2011

UNHCR is alarmed by a string of recent security incidents targeting the Dadaab refugee complex in northern Kenya. Dadaab is the world's largest refugee settlement and shelters more than 460,000 people.

An explosion on Monday at the Hagadera camp killed one person and seriously injured two police officers. Another improvised explosive device went off on Tuesday near the market at Ifo camp. Although there were no casualties a police vehicle was damaged.

In total there have been four such incidents at Dadaab since October when three aid workers were kidnapped. As a result three Kenyan police officers have been killed and four others wounded. There have also been threats against humanitarian agencies working in Dadaab. UNHCR condemns these attacks and calls for respect for peace and the civilian nature of refugee camps.

"We are deeply concerned for the well-being and saf...

Twin blasts in Dadaab raise concerns of worsening security

GENEVA, December 21 (UNHCR) – An improvised explosive device went off on Tuesday near the market at the Ifo refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya. There were no casualties but a police vehicle was damaged. The explosion came just a day after a blast in nearby Hagadera camp killed one police officer and seriously injured two others.

Dadaab: Walking the fine line between helping refugees and risking lives
UNHCR Web Site, 28/11/2011
DADAAB, Kenya, November 28 (UNHCR) – Ibrahim held up an X-ray of his broken thigh bone, taken when he first arrived in the Dadaab refugee complex of north-eastern Kenya. Five months later, he still cannot walk.

"I fell off a car when I was heading to Kenya from the Bay region [in southern Somalia]," the 31-year-old explained, sitting at the entrance of his white tent in the red earth. "When I arrived in Dadaab, I went to the hospital. But I left because I was afraid they would amputate it."

UNHCR field officer Henok Ochalla rebuked him for not using crutches, and called for an ambulance to take the father of six to the nearest camp hospital. "If only we had an extended presence in the camps, we would be able to assess the situation of families and to refer medical cases like Ibrahim's," said Ochalla.

He and his colleagues were going from tent to tent in Dadaab's Ifo 2...

Life-saving work continues in Kenya's Dadaab camps
UNHCR Briefing Notes, 21/10/2011
In the Dadaab refugee complex in eastern Kenya, we are seeing a sharp drop in the number of new arrivals from Somalia. This could be due to the border military operations or the onset of heavy rains in the area. No newly-arriving refugees have approached the registration centre in the last week.

Following last Thursday’s security incident in Dadaab, UNHCR and partner agencies have been continuing life-saving work for hundreds of thousands of refugees. Our staff and more than 30 partners remain operational in Dadaab’s three camps - Ifo, Dagahaley and Hagadera - as well as the new sites of Ifo 2, and Kambioos.

Together with the World Food Programme, UNHCR is distributing emergency food rations and relief supplies to recent arrivals. Water trucking to the new sites is ongoing while all three hospitals in Ifo, Dagahaley and Hagadera camps are providing health care to the re...
