I would love to have more books to read.

She was born in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp to parents who fled the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“My name is Jean and I am 14-years-old. I was born in Nyarugusu refugee camp in 2002. My parents fled the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during the peak of the conflict. My siblings and I were all born in Nyarugusu. We have a safe place to stay here and I am happy with the living conditions in Tanzania.

I have been studying at Hodari Primary School in the area. I love studying there. The school is nice because the teachers are great. I love my friends. We often play football together. We were provided with books, pens and school uniforms. I would love to have more books to read because reading is my favourite activity.

My life’s treasures are my parents. I want to continue to live happily with my father and mother. I also like gardening. I have a small garden where my father and I plant vegetables.

One day, when I graduate from school I want to be a teacher. I want to teach mathematics. I love mathematics.”

DRC has been plagued with instability even after a peace agreement was signed in 2002. Many people were killed and fled DRC to neighboring countries. Many of Congolese refugees have been unable to return. The United States Government has agreed to resettle more than 30,000 Congolese refugees from Tanzania as part of a regional resettlement.
