A Joyful Graduation Ceremony for Refugees in North Uganda
|
NRC, 15/06/2016
|
On three consecutive bright mornings in June 2016, South Sudanese refugee and host community youth, with a great deal of excitement, flocked to their respective vocational skill training sites in Nyumanzi, Ayilo II and Ocea. Some of them wore gowns fashioned by their friends in the tailoring class and looked just like Makerere graduates. A six month journey had culminated in their graduating from short-term courses in one of eight different skills
that included bakery and catering, electronics, hair dressing and saloon management, tailoring and garment cutting, brick laying and concrete practice, poultry, horticulture, and carpentry and joinery.
The joyful graduation ceremonies took place on 7th, 8th and 10th June in Nyumanzi, Ayilo II and Ocea respectively, under the theme ‘Skilling Youth for Sustainable Livelihood’. In total, 485 trainees of whom 305 (63% females) completed the... |

South Sudan refugee outflow grows as relief funds lag
|
UNHCR, 19/04/2016
|
GENEVA, April 19 (UNHCR) – A combination of new fighting in previously peaceful areas, food insecurity and severe humanitarian funding shortages continue to cause a sharp worsening of the situation in South Sudan for many civilians.
Recent fighting between government and opposition forces in Western Bahr al Ghazal state has displaced more than 96,000 people to Wau, a small town in the north-west of South Sudan, the world's youngest country.
All the African nation's six neighbours – Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda – are now reporting rising refugee inflows, at a time when operations to meet their needs are severely underfunded.
"With the Regional Refugee Response Plan funded at just eight per cent, many life-saving services are threatened and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is extremely concerned," spokesperson Ariane ... |

UN Agencies Concerned About Limited Funding To Assist South Sudanese Refugees In Sudan
|
WFP, UNHCR, UNICEF, 25/04/2016
|
KHARTOUM – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today expressed deep concern at funding shortfalls which could affect the assistance that is being provided to South Sudanese refugees in Sudan.
“Our resources are being stretched at a time when needs are quickly growing,” said UNHCR’s Representative in Sudan, Mohammed Adar. “Over 50,000 South Sudanese have crossed into Sudan since the beginning of 2016, surpassing the planning figure set for the entire year. Further shortfalls in funding will hamper our ability to continue providing assistance for the existing South Sudanese refugees in Sudan while also responding to the emergency needs of new arrivals.” UNHCR humanitarian requirements for 2016 remain 18% funded, leaving over US$128 million in unmet needs.... |

Aiming for the skies, refugee girl must first finish school
KULE REFUGEE CAMP, Ethiopia, Feb 11 (UNHCR) – Before the war came and she and her family fled, Nyahok Reath loved watching United Nations aid planes taking off from the airport near her home in South Sudan.
The 13-year-old decided she would do all she could to become a pilot. "I would like to go to different parts of the world, and help people in need," said Nyahok, who is in primary school in the refugee camp in Gambella, Ethiopia where she now lives.
She certainly has the determination, and her teacher says she could make the grades. But along with the other 127,500 refugee children in Gambella, a lack of funding for full education means that her dreams may never take flight.
Currently, UNHCR and its partners can only teach up to ninth grade, the first year of secondary school, in the two high schools at which m... |

Food insecurity drives more South Sudanese to Sudan
|
UNHCR, 29/03/2016
|
GENEVA, March 29 (UNHCR) – Increased food insecurity in South Sudan – caused by the ongoing conflict and deteriorating economic conditions – is driving an increasing number of people to seek refuge in neighbouring Sudan, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has warned.
Heightened food insecurity and growing unrest in parts of South Sudan, especially in the north-western States of Northern Bahr El Ghazal and Warrap, have resulted in the flight of some 38,000 people into East and South Darfur since the end of January.
"UNHCR fears the situation could quickly worsen as the nutrition situation in Upper Nile, Warrap, and Northern Bahr Ghazal grows increasingly serious," UNHCR spokesperson Adrian Edwards told reporters at a news briefing in Geneva on Tuesday (March 29). "They need humanitarian help including food, water and basic relief items," he added.
The Government of Sudan's Human... |

Books not bombs for Sudan refugees
|
IRINNEWS, 09/02/2016
|
One of the first stops for people fleeing the conflict in Sudan’s South Kordofan region is the town of Yida, 20 kilometres across the border in South Sudan.
The town shelters more than 70,000 Sudanese refugees who have set up homes, businesses and have established themselves within the local community.
But now, in an effort to decongest Yida and provide better services, the government and humanitarian partners are trying to persuade them to relocate to an official camp in Ajuong Thonk, further south in Unity State.
It was established in 2013 to shelter civilians fleeing the fighting between the Sudanese government and rebels of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM).
The camp shelters 31,000 – a population that has more than doubled over the course of 2015 – and is likely to expand further still with the en... |
