Objectif(s) | To strengthen human development and self-reliance of refugee women as well as the national Venezuelan Guasdualito community through economic development and the production and marketing of handicrafts. |
Results/Impact | The cooperative is comprised of Guasdualito residents who are also artisans. According to Guasdualito UNHCR statistical data, 47% of people of concern to UNHCR in the region are women. In 2009, CARITAS Guasdualito conducted a study in order to determine what the needs were as well as what potential opportunities existed for women of concern to UNHCR and national residents. The study revealed that most of them did not have access to formal employment, and for those employed, the pay was very low, so, they preferred to stay at home taking care of the family needs. |
Why is this considered a Good practice? | The coop project has helped to develop the artistic expression of women who comprise this group, helping to relieve the stresses of everyday life, to learn and teach handicrafts, improve their self-esteem, additional resources for family support, and also facilitated the integration of refugee women and asylum refugee status between themselves and with the host community of Guasdualito. Also, given its importance in the area, the project has captured the interest and assistance of the Ministry of Popular Power for Culture, consolidating local real integration by incorporating the theme of refugee in public policy local government. |
