Objectif(s) | Provide recreation therapy for PoC with disabilities on the beach of Las Palmas in Esmeraldas city. |
Results/Impact | In Las Palmas beach, men and women from different groups, gather on weekends to enjoy recreational spaces, led by OVCI professionals and supported by lifeguards from the Esmeraldas municipality. Experts in recreational therapy assist people with disabilities so they can enjoy the sea and the beach despite their health problems. |
Why is this considered a Good practice? | It is the first time that persons with disabilities, whoave always been “invisible”, can go now to the beach and enjoy the sea and therapy in the province of Esmeraldas. The project includes transport from the patient’s home to the beach and back. The municipality of Esmeraldas has the necessary equipment for this activity: amphibious chairs, life jackets, lazy chairs, installations especially built to facilitate the movement of wheelchairs, and cabins with chairs to stay as long as both family members and persons with disabilities want. Involvement of the cantonal government, UNHCR and OVCI in a social cause and care for refugees and local population. It is a resource for the integration of the refugee population and persons in need of international protection with disabilities. |
