Results/Impact

From January to July 2010, it has hosted 39 people of concern to UNHCR at serious risk and vulnerability, exposed to persecution of gangs, domestic, sexual or gender-based violence, abuse, exploitation or trafficking in their countries of origin. The shelter offers not only the means of subsistence, but also security, psychosocial support and medical care whenever is required, which allows the asylum process to be more bearable and, above all, to avoid the asylum-seekers abandonment of the procedures, despite the delays and lack of safeguards.

Why is this considered a Good practice? The immigration system provides for the systematic detention of undocumented immigrants. In contrast, UNHCR promotes the shelters as is a feasible alternative to detention in Mexico, taking into consideration the Mexico’ Catholic Church tradition and respect of humane treatment of migrants and promotion of their rights.
