Photo exhibition by internationally acclaimed artists shows refugees in a new light
Senegalese artist Omar Viktor Diop is part of this collaborative project between UNHCR and Annenberg Foundation
GENEVA / DAKAR, 22 March 2016 – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, announced today the creation of a unique and powerful photo exhibit, REFUGEE, which illustrates the growing forced displacement crisis through the lens of some of the world’s most renowned photographers. UNHCR provided logistical support and collaborated with the Annenberg Foundation in Los Angeles, United States, on the exhibit which will open at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles on April 23 and run until August 21, 2016. With newly commissioned work by internationally acclaimed photographers Lynsey Addario (USA), Omar Victor Diop (Senegal), Graciela Iturbide (Mexico), Martin Schoeller (Germany) and Tom Stoddart (UK), REFUGEE will show the daily lives of refugees around the world in a new light.
The compelling images will give visitors to the exhibition insights into the plight of refugees, including their efforts to survive, their needs, their dreams and their hopes for a better future. “This remarkable initiative is very timely, coming as violence and human rights abuses uproot people around the world at an unprecedented pace,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. “The photographs in this exhibit portray their courage, resilience and strength. They show that this is not an anonymous movement; these are ordinary people, who have been forced to flee.”
Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Lynsey Addario highlights the situation of displaced people living in Bangladesh and Myanmar. Omar Victor Diop’s work shows refugees from the Central African Republic in Cameroon while Graciela Iturbide will highlight Central American youth seeking protection in Mexico. Martin Schoeller, well-known for his close-up portraits of politicians and celebrities, has turned his lens on resettled refugees in the USA. Tom Stoddart focuses on men, women and children on the move in Greece, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia and Germany.
REFUGEE will also show the world from the perspective of some of those forced to flee. For this, displaced youth in Colombia took part in a photo camp organized by Vision Workshops. Through photography and writing, they documented their daily lives as displaced people within their own country. UNHCR, as part of its collaboration with the Annenberg Foundation, facilitated contacts with displaced communities and supported the photographers with background information.
REFUGEE will also feature a documentary, produced by Tiger Nest Films and showing the photographers working on location for the exhibition.

Une exposition de photos présente les réfugiés sous un nouveau jour
L'artiste sénégalais Omar Viktor Diop fait partie de ce projet du HCR et de la Foundation Annenberg
GENEVE / DAKAR, 22 mars 2016 - Le HCR, l’Agence des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés, a annoncé aujourd’hui le lancement d’une exposition de photos uniques et superbes, REFUGEE, qui illustre, à travers l’objectif de certains des plus grands photographes au monde, la crise des déplacements forcés qui ne cesse de s’aggraver. Le HCR a fourni un soutien logistique et collaboré avec la Fondation Annenberg à Los Angeles aux États-Unis, pour organiser cette exposition, qui ouvrira ses portes à l’Espace Annenberg pour la photographie, à Los Angeles, le 23 avril, et qui se terminera le 21 août 2016. Présentant de nouvelles œuvres de commande signées par des photographes internationalement reconnus, tels que Lynsey Addario (Etats-Unis), Omar Victor Diop (Sénégal), Graciela Iturbide (Mexique), Martin Schoeller (Allemagne) et Tom Stoddart (Grande-Bretagne), REFUGEE présente la vie quotidienne des réfugiés dans le monde sous un nouveau jour.
Des images marquantes permettront aux visiteurs de mieux comprendre la détresse des réfugiés, y compris leurs efforts pour survivre, leurs besoins, leurs rêves et leurs espoirs d’un avenir meilleur. « Cette initiative remarquable arrive à point, car la violence et le non-respect des droits humains déracinent les gens partout dans le monde à un rythme sans précédent », a déclaré le Haut-Commissaire des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés, Filippo Grandi. « Les photographies de cette exposition illustrent leur courage, leur résilience et leur force. Elles montrent qu’il ne s’agit pas d’un mouvement anonyme ; il s’agit de gens ordinaires que l’on a forcés à fuir ».
Photographe lauréate du prix Pulitzer, Lynsey Addario met en relief la situation des personnes déplacées vivant au Bangladesh et au Myanmar. Les œuvres d’Omar Victor Diop montrent des réfugiés de la République centrafricaine au Cameroun, tandis que Graciela Iturbide représente des jeunes d’Amérique centrale en quête de protection au Mexique. Martin Schoeller, bien connu pour ses portraits rapprochés de politiques et de célébrités, a tourné son objectif vers des réfugiés réinstallés aux États-Unis. Tom Stoddart met l’accent sur les hommes, les femmes et les enfants qui se rendent en Grèce, en Croatie, en Slovénie, en Serbie et en Allemagne.
REFUGEE montrera aussi le monde du point de vue des personnes obligées de fuir. Pour ce faire, de jeunes déplacés en Colombie ont pris part à un atelier de photographie organisé par Vision Workshops. Par la photographie et l’écriture, ils font le récit de leur existence quotidienne en tant que personnes déplacées dans leur propre pays. Le HCR, dans le cadre de sa collaboration avec la Fondation Annenberg, a facilité la mise en rapport avec les populations déplacées et aidé les photographes en les renseignant sur le contexte des situations.
REFUGEE présentera aussi un documentaire, produit par Tiger Nest Films et montrant les photographes travaillant en extérieur pour l’exposition.
