Ramadan 2013: Saddam, his young mother, and two brothers are refugees in Za’atari camp. His father was imprisoned by the Syrian government and has not been heard from since. His mother is still unsure whether she is a widow or not. They stay with Saddam’s grandfather and family. During happier times families like theirs spent their evenings watching soap operas on television, but now they watch television channels that give updates on the revolution and stories from their home communities – always hoping to find some scrap of news about the lives that have been left behind. ©UNHCR/Jared Kohler

“Being a volunteer means helping people who are suffering, because they are refugees and in need. But the volunteers themselves are living the fate of being away from home every day. They wipe away the tears of their families and the tears of strangers.” This photo was taken by a Syrian refugee volunteer in Mafraq. ©CARE/Nafla Alapood
