An official at the High Commission for Malaysia in Ottawa stated during a 12 January 1996 telephone interview that the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur is composed of ten constituencies which are the following: Kepong, Batu, Wangsa Maju, Segamput, Titiwangsa, Bukit Bintang, Lembah Pantai, Seputeh, Cheras and Bandar Tun Razak. For the names of members of parliament (MPs) for the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur since the last general election of April 1995, this official referred the DIRB to the attached 12 January 1996 fax.

Further information to the above could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB. However, attached please find a 17 August 1995 Far Eastern Economic Review (FEER) report that may be of interest. According to this report, the election of Wee Choo Keong, a Democratic Action Party (DAP) member, to the Bukit Bintang seat in Kuala Lumpur was declared illegal by a High Court ruling in August 1995 (23). Lee Chong Meng from the Malaysian Chinese Association, a party that belongs to the ruling National Front Coalition was appointed to the position (ibid.).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
