An Official at the Embassy of Nicaragua in Ottawa stated during a 18 December 1996 telephone interview that a foreign woman who married a Nicaraguan citizen in 1990 in Bulgaria does not automatically receive Nicaraguan citizenship. The woman would be allowed to come and live with her husband in Nicaragua but in order to do so, she would have to apply for a residence permit upon her arrival in Nicaragua (ibid.). The same woman would be able to acquire Nicaraguan citizenship after three years of uninterrupted residence in Nicaragua (ibid.).
