A letter sent to the Research Directorate on 11 February 1998 by the consul of the Embassy of the Republic of Hungary in Ottawa states:
Residence status. Types of Residence Permits that can be given for non-Hungarian citizens including those who marry to a Hungarian citizen upon application if the necessary requirements are met by them:
- Temporary Residence Permit (for residence up to a year)
- Long-term Residence Permit (for longer period)
- Immigration Permit (for immigration purposes)
Renewal. Residence Permits can be renewed by application submitted to the local or competent police authorities.
Residence status is not given if the foreigner does not have:
- a "long-term visa" or
- a valid passport or
- an assured livelihood and accommodation in Hungary or
- means for leaving the country after the permit expires.
Residence status withdraw. The status will not be renewed or will be withdrawn if the conditions for further residence are not assured or if the reason of entry - e.g. study or work - ceases to exist.
The consul did not provide information on whether the above information is different for the period from the mid-1980s to the present. Additional or corroborating information on residence status in Hungary could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
