Central African Republic

Although the brutal violence between Seleka rebels and the “anti-balaka” militia has ebbed, attacks on civilians remain alarming and widespread in the Central African Republic. Witnesses on both sides frequently described the attacks as retaliatory in nature, indicating a growing cycle of revenge killings. Since the fighting began in December 2012, thousands of civilians have been killed by both sides, hundreds of thousands have fled their homes, and nearly half-a-million people – many of them Muslim – have taken refuge across the borders in neighboring countries.
