The following information was provided by an officer in the visa section at the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Washington, DC, in a 15 June 1998 telephone interview with the Research Directorate.
Reapplication for a United Arab Emirates (UAE) visa is possible in the case of a wife of an Indian worker whose residence visa has elapsed because she was out of the country for more than six months, provided that she still meets the requirements. For example, with the application, she would need to submit a letter of invitation from her UAE sponsor, i.e. her husband's employer, or a letter from an university in the case that she was studying outside the UAE.
There is no provision for permanent residence status in the UAE for temporary workers. The only visa issued to persons working in the UAE is the work visa, which is also considered his/her residence visa.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
