Information on the names and ridings of Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidates in Edo State, including the results of the 1993 elections and the political situation and affiliation of Edo State could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB.

Reuters reported that the Social Democratic Party presidential candidate, Moshood Abiola had won the balloting in Edo State (14 June 1993). This report could not be corroborated among the sources consulted by the DIRB.

However, several sources report that the military government annulled the 12 June 1993 election before complete results of the balloting could be announced (AI 1994, 228; Country Reports 1994, 213, 221; HRW 1994, 28; LCHR 1994, 254; Xinhua 5 July 1993).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
