A court in Kosovo has sentenced a former ethnic Albanian rebel fighter to five years in prison for a war crime he committed during the 1998-99 war in the then Serbian province.

The European Union's law-enforcing mission in Kosovo (EULEX) said a mixed panel of one local and two European judges found Sali Rexhepi guilty of torture of a Kosovo-Albanian civilian in custody of the rebel Kosovo Liberation Army.

EU deployed EULEX to Kosovo after it declared independence from Serbia in 2008 to help the fledgling state assert the rule of law.
