A representative of the Embassy of Afghanistan in Washington, DC, states that Kabul airport was open in June 1992 and both Aryanna and Iran Air were flying into and out of Kabul during that month (7 Sept. 1993). However, because of war conditions, flights were erratic; they occurred not on a regular basis but whenever flying was possible (Ibid.).
Although not referring specifically to Aryanna, the attached AFP report refers to a 12 June 1992 attack on a Russian transport plane attempting to land at Kabul airport (12 June 1992). Elaborating on travel difficulties in Afghanistan in 1992, Country Reports 1992 states that "[Kabul] airport was attacked several times after July and the control tower destroyed, making air travel into Kabul difficult" (1993, 1117).
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
