In a 20 November 1998 fax, the Second Secretary of the Royal Nepalese Embassy in Washington, DC, stated that in Nepal, citizenship is not acquired solely by virtue of being born in Nepal. Persons born in Nepal to foreign nationals or to "refugee parents" are not eligible for Nepali citizenship. The Second Secretary did not provide further information on citizenship requirements.
Information on the acquisition of Nepali citizenship further to that provided in the Nepal Citizenship Act of 1964 and the Nepal Citizenship (Fifth Amendment) Act of April 1992 could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. Please note that both Acts can be accessed on REFLEG at [REFWORLD/LEGAL/REFLEG/ NEPAL].
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
