Pakistan's state body on religious issues has approved the practice of in vitro fertilization, also known as test-tube babies.
The chairman of the Islamic Ideology Council (ICC), Maulana Muhammad Ali Sherani, told journalists in Islamabad that the ICC's latest gathering also decided to consider human cloning and sex changes as un-Islamic.
Sherani said people can change their genders only if they are born with the physical characteristics of both sexes.
He said surgery in such cases must be done only in accordance with Islamic principles.
The ICC remains undecided regarding the use of DNA test results as primary evidence in investigations of rape.
The ICC has said in the past that such cases have to be investigated in accordance with Shari'a law, which requires at least four mature individuals to testify to an occurrence of rape.
