Japan's clothing retail giant UNIQLO has been supporting UNHCR's operations since 2006, providing some 4 million items of clothing for forcibly displaced people in more than 20 countries. The increasingly important collaboration with the refugee agency is part of UNIQLO's corporate social responsibility commitment to encourage people to recycle clothing for the benefit of the needy. But UNIQLO - a subsidiary of the Fast Retailing Group - helps in many other ways, including through cash donations and staff deployments.

In 2011, responding to a devastating drought in the Horn of Africa - the worst in 60 years - UNIQLO donated US$1 million in financial aid through UNHCR, in addition to a US$1 million donation from the Fast Retailing Group CEO and president, Tadashi Yanai.

The partnership between UNIQLO and UNHCR has developed into a global one, with the Japanese company supporting UNHCR operations and refugees in various ways, including through awareness-raising and internship programmes for refugees, notably in Bangladesh and Nepal. In 2013, UNIQLO donated US$1 million towards UNHCR's emergency response to the Syria crisis. The company has also provided clothing for Syrian refugees.
