The Campaign to end Statelessness
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons. Although significant action has been taken to address statelessness since 2011, when UNHCR marked the 50th anniversary of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness, at least 10 million people worldwide remain stateless and suffer the consequences of not being considered as nationals of any country.
Given the focus of the 1954 Convention on the standards of treatment for stateless people, UNHCR is commemorating this anniversary through activities which highlight the human face of statelessness. The centrepiece initiative is the launch of a 10-year campaign to eradicate statelessness by 2024, which will seek greater political commitment to resolve protracted situations of statelessness and to prevent new situations of mass statelessness due to state succession or arbitrary deprivation of nationality.
Other activities to raise awareness and encourage practical responses include a series of dialogues with stateless people to better understand the impact of statelessness and the organization of the First Global Forum on Statelessness, which will bring together policymakers, international organizations, NGOs and academics to discuss new research and policy perspectives to tackle some of the most pressing statelessness situations around the world.
