Recruitment of General Service Staff
General Service Staff are recruited locally, but can be of any nationality. Candidates should be legally resident in the country where the post they are applying for is situated. They should also meet all established criteria.
Staff in this category work in support roles and their functions vary from general administrative and secretarial assistance to more specialized positions, such as IT (information technology) assistant or protection assistant.
While the majority of general service positions are filled by internal candidates, some posts may be open to external recruitment.
Each position has its own requirements in terms of qualifications and professional experience, but the following points reflect the broad requirements for a position in this category:
- Completion of secondary school;
- Minimum 4-5 years of relevant work experience (depending on the grade of the position);
- Excellent English and working knowledge of at least one other official UN language (French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian or Arabic).
