Cristina’s Story, Iraq
Christina on a mission to Iraq to give psychosocial support to Syrian refugees in the refugee camp of Dormiz.
Cristina Pardo from Argentina, a White Helmets volunteer, tells about her adoptive family at the Dormiz refugee camp in Iraq:
During the daily walk-through of the camp, some little hands always held mine: it was the children who liked accompanying us and who, after only a few days, said hello to us in English (the language in which we communicated). The father of one of the families decided that another volunteer and I would not be without a family in Iraq, so he appointed us as his sisters. Every day, he waited for us in his tent with his wife and daughters so that we could rest and take tea with “our family”. The other residents of the camp referred to him as “your brother”. We devoted our last day to saying goodbye to the families. It was very emotional, and a surprise was waiting for us at the last tent: the family welcomed us with a traditional tea from Argentina: Mate!
